MIRACLE OF NATURE...
It is their biggest revenge against nature to survive this long with nothing...
THE MAASAI...
Beautiful, full of pride and independed, rich in culture and traditions. Peaceful and cool tribe, maybe too cool...!
Very stubborn almost insisting and mind set very hard to deal with...
Did not, or could not...! give up, or changed their behavior or attitudes...
However, they know now they cannot handle or deal with all those new things to them. Diseases, sickness, food and importance of education. Now they realized they are indeed in need of knowledge, opportunities and options...
"Look at me, I have a mobile phone and I also bought one for my wife. If there is a problem at home she calls me. I sold almost all of mt cattle and I started a business. I am working very hard and my wife and children are not hungry. My wife dress nicely and my children going to school."
"You don't live with milk anymore"?
"Who wants to live with milk? Do you? No one. If we have money we buy good food."
"What is good food?"
"Rice, potatoes, cabbage, fruit, macaroni, eggs..."
"Do you eat fish?"
"Of course I eat. Maasai elders had enough time to sit and make all those nonsense believes. I have no time for it. I am working. Also I will not circumcise my daughter, I know how bad it is."
"But you are forgetting something. Because of your elders -- the Maasai elders, you came this far and keep the precious name Maasai...Don't forget that...!"
"Last year I worked somewhere else. The place was not Masai land. They were different people. When I returned my place I could not enter my house. I did but I got out immediately. Dark, smoke, dirt, smell...
How are we living this way? Now I know. We have to change our life style. If I had enough cattle I would sale them, and build a nice house with big windows."
"What kind of question is this? Of course I want to go to school and after that find a good job. Look at me I have no Maasai ornements. I don't wear them. I want to live in a house, nice house, nice house...!
"Why don't you build one? I know you have cattle."
"Yes, I do but it does not belong to me. It is for my father and he does not allow me to do anything."
"Remember, papa, he was saying that young people do not have love and respect, is it true?"
"No, it is not. We have love and respect but we want different life style then our elders. 20 years ago no one knew school, food even simple tea. Now we know and we have every right to have them. This does not mean we love and respect less."
'Don't tell me Maasai very kind to each other?"
"What do you expect? Survival the fittest...!"

" Yes we did survived this long with nothing. But now we want to live. We are not hungry for food only. We are hungry for everthing."
"I do not understand young generation...those young boys. They are very selfish. They do not care for anybody and not think of anybody. They have no respect and love.
In my time, we cared and shared with each other; we gave everything to each other. However, those days we lived with love and respect.
We are not afraid of people, but very afraid of God. If God is not happy with you He will kill you.
We are very happy that God gave us heart and life. We pray for people to be happy and healthy.
Even, when we sleep hungry; we know God will give us food tomorrow. We do not believe life after death. When you are dead, it is over. God is in the sky and the soil. God watches everybody and everything. Because He created everybody and everything "
- Oldest Papa
It is not an art living in Masai Mara. However, surviving with nothing and still spirit is high, is priceless. They learned it in the mother's womb before they were born.
Yes, Maasai are the miracle of nature.
However, years and years jealously and hatred among each other has accumulated, violence toward women and children has accumulated. The traditional family harmony seriously damaged of oppressing and contempt...

"Of course young people are different then us. Time is changing, food is changing, even they dress differently. It is their biggest right to change with the time. Look at me, I am a old man, even I am changing too. I eat different food and I sleep on the mattresses not on a skin."
- Papa...

"We are the Meshuki generation. We did grow up with milk and olosoro. But now, we want to eat different food and well balanced diet. We want to have a good education, so we can find good jobs. In the future, when we get married, we don't want our wives are suffering for their children, like our mothers were suffering, when they were raising us."
- Meshuki generation of Maasai...

"Our fathers gave us cattle, but not education... And without education we cannot deal with new, modern life. We have cattle, no education. It means, we have nothing!"

Maasai hero of Kenya...
And they are almost reaching the end. Maasai survived anything; hunger, sickness, raids, war, drought, fire and flood. They were strong and brave. They were survivors. They could calculate anything and deal with that...
Until now...!
They did not calculate AIDS and it hit them badly...
"I told my wife if you sleep with anybody, I kill you. Because I know AIDS."
- Chief Morran
( Killing women and children do not exist among Maasai. It is the biggest sin.)
Reactions to NAFIworld...
"NAFIworld, you are flattering yourself. This idea of AIDS will never finish in Africa. Many Maasai and African women sleeping with men for a half kilo sugar. Fight poverty first. Not AIDS! "
- H.K.
"Many people come and visit us. We are very famous that we still stick with our life style, with our culture...Yes we are, because right now we have no another options...We stuck between past and the present.
Give us options, we shall show you if we stick to our culture or completely changed...!
If I go to school, or if I have good job, you wouldn't see me like this. "
- M.O.
Years and years Maasai tried to protect themselves from others.
They protect their costumes, traditions, culture and believes and of course their precious cattle...
Nevertheless this protection also isolated them from learning new things, different things, perhaps better...
Therefore they created a safe place, safe condition for them, so they can let their defenses down for each other and shared who they really are with each other...
Therefore they know each other maybe too well...!
They have thousand things to believe. They survived with those believes which gave them power, strength and faith to continue while they are wandering lonely, desolate and empty places. Behind their cattle carrying on for survivals and keeping their precious name...Maasai.
"Believe in yourself and believe what you are doing, then you will grow."
However, for some reason, or for many reasons they did not grow into bigger and better but they grew into helpless, hopeless and desperate situation. However, there must be something they can do to get out from helpless and hopeless condition. Their new behaviors and attitudes can solve the problems...
And this is EMPOWERMENT...
